Creativity In The Age of AI: Threat Or Tool?

As Generative AI moves from the laboratory to the creative studio, the world of art and design has faced a profound identity crisis. While few critics and researchers reveals that the AI will soon diminish human creativity, and in no time it will start devaluing the hard won technical skills, while others see it as a tool that promotes expression and removes the unnecessary effort required to work on a specific creative piece of work.

Much like the camera has forced the creative persons such as painters to explore "Impressionism", AI is continuously pushing forward the modern creators towards a bright future where "intent" and "taste" carries more importance than unnecessary labor. We are now moving forward towards a generation called- " Cyber Creativity", where the most impactful works won't be made by machines alone, but by the humans who are trained to direct these artificial intelligence tools. The soul remains human; but the scale of work continues to remain as superhuman.

Beginning from Midjourney to ChatGPT, Artificial Intelligence is no longer offering a futuristic concept, it is basically a daily reality for millions of creators who are working across the globe. This shift has definitely ignited a hot debate: " Is AI acting as a threat to human creative skills? or Is it just a promising replacement for it?"

The Threat: For many of us, the threat is both economic and artistic. There is a valid fear that " Good Enough" AI content is flooding the market with new ideas, which is suppressing the authenticity and value of human mastery of imagination and exploring new ideas and working on them. Also, because AI is trained basically on historical data and it risks creating a cultural loop, where forms of new art and other forms of creativity becomes a statistical average of the past times rather than taking a bold leap towards further times.

The Tool: AI is known to act as a force multiplier. It allows an architect to iterate fifty designs in the time it once took to draw one single design. By training the AI with " colour grading" or " basic coding", AI has liberated the human beings to focus on high level strategies and emotional resonance. It has made the artists, ie, human beings to now act as a director and monitor the work of AI.

Final Thoughts:

Artificial Intelligence, or AI, is shifting the value of creativity from technical application to vision and curation. The so called " human touch" is now found in the unique perspective and intention behind giving specific prompts for better output results and this way, it can become an effective tool for us to work on our daily projects, by using it moderately so as to ensure that our creative talent is not wasted.
